Why she cleansed "Cleansing is spiritual for me," Kai tells SELF. "It's like cleaning out the debris in my consciousness." In a recent interview, she dismissed the current trend for ‘clean eating’ as a fad. “I love kale and I’m an avocado obsessive,” the domestic goddess told Good Housekeeping magazine. “But life is about balance, it’s not about being smug. You don’t eat things because you think they’re good for you.”

Here’s a great reason to make a morning cuppa matcha a habit. The phytochemicals in green tea have been shown to help trigger both phase-one and phase-two liver detoxification. In phase one, toxins are made water-soluble by enzymes; and in phase two, toxins are bound to protective chemicals that neutralize them and allow them to be eliminated via bile or urine. The polyphenol antioxidants in green tea are also anti-inflammatory and have cancer-preventing effects.

Excess sodium, found in many processed foods and restaurant meals, raises blood pressure in some people and can have other adverse effects. The Dietary Guidelines recommend a limit of 2,300 milligrams a day for the general population; people with hypertension or prehypertension can benefit from a further reduction to 1,500 milligrams per day. As you cut back on sodium, eat more potassium-rich foods, which help lower blood pressure. These include citrus fruits, bananas, beans, avocados, some fish, and dairy products.

To set yourself up for success, try to keep things simple. Eating a healthier diet doesn’t have to be complicated. Glutathione is an antioxidant concentrated in the liver that helps bind toxins and escort them out of the body via urine or bile. Glutathione may also boost the absorption of various nutrients in the foods you eat. Glutathione can be obtained directly from a few foods, including raw spinach, avocado, and asparagus; and it can also be produced by your body from the amino acids glutamine, glycine, and cysteine. Foods containing the building blocks of glutathione include bone broth and sulfur-containing foods such as cruciferous veggies and garlic. Getting enough vitamin C, vitamin D, and minerals like zinc and selenium are also important for glutathione production.
That means one drink a day for women, two a day for men. People over 65 should drink even less. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1½ ounces of 80-proof spirits. At least half your grains should be whole grains, such as whole wheat, oats, barley, or brown rice. Whole grains retain the bran and germ and thus all (or nearly all) of the nutrients and fiber of the grain. One sure way of finding whole grains is to look for a product labeled “100% whole wheat” or “100%" of some other whole grain. You can also look for a whole grain listed as the first ingredient, though there still may be lots of refined wheat in the product. Another option is to look for the voluntary “Whole Grain Stamp” from the Whole Grains Council. Or try this tip: Look for less than a 10-to-1 ratio of “total carbohydrates” to “fiber” on the nutrition label.

There’s plenty to reflect upon on this one year anniversary: where I started, where I am now, and what I’ve learned. I started this new adventure on January 11 last year.
